J. This is a fantastic follow up to the epic 'The Mist Bearer'. Fast-paced, atmospheric and wonderfully melodic black metal with a highly emotional feel.
Would love a physical release! Favorite track: The Mist Bearer (Part II).

REVIEW ON SORROW ETERNAL : 8.5/10
How would you construct a black metal starter pack? If you had to hand someone 5 seminal albums in the growing lexicon of black metal, where would you start? And, more importantly, where would you end? A genre of music that seemed constricted by production values and rigid guidelines has now become one of the most versatile on the planet. And it's only going to continue to expand with time. So while your starter pack might include Bathory, Burzum, or Darkthrone, that would only tell a fraction of what has become a rich and bountiful lineage. Modern black metal is deeper than ever, not burdened by boundaries and ideologies. It is a framework that can be molded and built upon. For A Diadem of Dead Stars, a one man project hailing from Greece spearheaded by 'The Pilgrim," it's a black canvas, waiting to have paint of all colors splashed on it. The follow up to the first part of The Mist Bearer series, Pt. II is a reminder that the history of a genre doesn't end with one wave.

It's somewhat staggering to hear how easily melody is infused and spread into an otherwise jagged mix. But more than that, how the two coexist and reinforce one another. The title track is everything you'd want from a melodic black metal track, often walking the line between solemn and divine. The periods of overflowing distortion and screamed vocals can bring the hair on your arms to abrupt attention, while the restrained melodies do everything possible to soothe the savage beast. The two sides function in and around one another, somehow, and create an atmosphere that is worth the multiple listens it would take to dissect it all. The song's counterpart, A Blood Red Sun Sets On Wintry Shores, is cut from the same cloth; perhaps just a cleaner portion. It is more about construction and contrast, with soft and sullen instrumentals woven together into one tapestry. It isn't metal, per se, as the namesake elements are missing. But it is heavy in a different, more profound regard. It weighs on you, whether by a pull on your emotional strings, or simply by the way it gently calms you.

This isn't about what is or isn't true black metal; that argument will last far longer than any of the bands we use to fight it. It's about what it can be. The new waves of artists are taking it in directions early fans and bands never would have thought fit. And yet, as we've seen time and time again, it's working. A Diadem of Dead Stars maintains the integrity of the sound, while still making it his own, song after song, album after album. There is no mold for how a finished piece needs to look and sound, no instruction book "For Dummies" (though that might be a million dollar idea down the line). Like any musical endeavor, it is restricted only by what you're willing to put into it. In this case, The Pilgrim shows a love for what was, and a brilliant understanding about where it can go from here. And remember: even Varg Vikernes, one of the old guard of black metal, has moved on to ambient sounds. Things can change.
